Abstract

Many advances in population health have been achieved thanks to the formulation and implementation of public policies. Successful examples include the reduction of maternal and infant mortality, increased survival of cancer patients and the stabilization and reduction (in some cases) of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, these changes have not been homogeneous at the global level, and enormous inequalities persist in these and other indicators at the expense of the poorest and most vulnerable populations. Advances in the understanding of the role of public policies reveal some aspects that can effectively contribute to achieving a better health situation in the populations.
