Abstract

Introduction: Stem cells are considered to be one of the greatest potential treatments to degenerative diseases. Intraarticular stem cell therapy has become increasingly used to treat knee osteoarthritis with little highquality evidence to support its use. So, the effectiveness, safety and its potential are worthy to be explored. Objective: To evaluate the quality of the evidence on the clinical and radiological efficacy of the use of intraarticular mesenchymal cells in comparison with other intra-articular treatments against knee osteoarthritis of any etiology for adult patients, reported between 2016 and 2021. Materials and methods: A systematic review of the literature was carried out in different databases of articles published between January 1st, 2016 and August 22nd, 2021. Studies that can provide an answer following the guidelines of the PRISMA 2020 declaration. Results: Twenty-two clinical trials were compared, including 668 patients with knee osteoarthritis. All studies included patients with a body mass index below 35 kg/m2 and Kellgren-Lawrence osteoarthritis ranging from grades I to IV. Conclusions: In general, MSC treatment shows to be safe and has great potential as an effective clinical therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis, although its efficacy and safety need to be evaluated more rigorously with trials with less risk of bias.
